How do you sell a fire extinguisher?

I hope your summer is starting well!


Whether you're bribing small children to stay cool and calm with ice cream, or glued in front of a desk fan yourself... I hope you're taking moments to breathe in, to recharge and to think about what's important to you outside of work. 



For many of us, the summer holidays are the great chance to reconnect with our family that we so desperately need. The Fireside clan have recently grown, and as we were introducing Jess to the rest of the team, we started to think about what's important to us, what inspires us and what's useful to share with you this week. We wanted to share with you a quote from each of us that drives us. 


Recently, I feel like I've been banging on about the need to talk about our problems rather than our solutions. David Ogilvy puts it better than I ever could: "When you're advertising fire extinguishers, start with fire". 


For Jess, the newest member of the team, she really likes to bring fresh perspectives to every organisation and problem she encounters and she really likes this quote "Remember: The rules, like streets, can only take you to known places. Underneath the grid is a field - it was always there - where to be lost is never wrong, but simply more... As a rule, be more." from Ocean Vuong.


Lisa said she knows it happens at every conference and every training session but there's a reason for it, and that's because this quote means something from Maya Angelou "People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel".


And lastly Lucy, who has recently been spending a lot of time talking to her nieces about what they want to be when they grow up, wanted to remember the importance of joy. She chose Hank Green's quote "You will always struggle with not feeling productive until you accept your own joy can be something you produce. It's not the only thing you will make, nor should it be, but it is valuable and beautiful". 


We hope these quotes give you a bit of insight into what working with and for Fireside is like, we'd love to hear if there's anything stuck above or around your desk, or anything you come back to repeatedly.
